Centralized In-network Caching for Information Centric Networking with Decoupling Data and Control Planes

I. INTRODUCTION In-network caching has been considered as one of the most notable features of ICN. Most previous works tried to figure out how to bring caches with intelligence to caching the most popular content objects efficiently, in either individual or cooperative way. Recently, Software-Defined Networking (SDN) has been recognized as another promising architecture evolution to network management in terms of flexibility and reconfigurability. The inherent advantage of SDN lies in the global uniform control of the network. Although there are some previous efforts try to integrate ICN with SDN, they mainly focus on the routing scope. We argue that in-network caching of ICN could also benefit from the concept of decoupling the data and control planes, just like the routing counterpart. Enlightened by the concept of SDN, in this paper, we contribute to novelly proposing and elaborating on the integration of ICN in-network caching and centralized control to improve caching efficiency and mitigate management burden. We also propose a greedy algorithm to solve the Optimization Problem of Object Placement.
