Designers of electronic power systems will tell you their least favorite problem is electro-magnetic interference. If a prototype design suffers from excessive EMI, the solution may require additional filtering or snubbers which can add significantly to the cost - and may not even solve the problem. In addition to cost, size and weight penalties, one must also consider the loss of efficiency due to energy being absorbed and converted into heat by the snubbers. The ideal way to deal with EMI is simply to avoid generating it in the first place through a thorough understanding of its root causes and by making informed and appropriate choices when selecting components.
