Rapid Bridge Replacements Using Lateral Slides

Lateral sliding of superstructures provides an effective method for rapid bridge replacement. This paperpresents three case studies for lateral slide projects completed in Ontario, Canada, including: the lateral slide ofthe new 630 foot long four span haunched steel plate girder Kenogami River Bridge; the lateral slide of theexisting 268 foot two span steel truss bridge to facilitate the Frog Rapids superstructure replacement; and thelateral slide of the existing 80 foot single span steel truss to facilitate the Wabigoon River Bridge replacement.By implementing the lateral slide method these projects maintained traffic throughout each stage ofconstruction. Means and methods presented in this paper also demonstrate how the lateral slide method canbe used for rapid bridge replacement projects.
