Trimaran is expected as a next-generation high-speed ship which realizes high speed navigation with sufficient stability supplied by the side-hulls. A lot of researches on resistance, propulsion and seakeeping of trimarans have been reported so far. However researches on maneuverability of trimarans in following and stern quartering seas were limited. Since a trimaran is able to be designed variously, the influence of side-hull positions on ship performance should be systematically examined. Firstly, the authors investigated the influence of side-hull positions on hydrodynamic forces, e.g. hull resistance, maneuvering forces, and wave exciting forces in stern quartering seas. Secondly, the 4 degrees of freedom model of the surge-sway-yaw-roll motions was developed for a trimaran propelled by waterjets by utilizing the experimental results. Finally, numerical simulations of turning tests in calm water and free running tests in following and stern quartering seas were executed for the subject trimaran with several longitudinal and transverse side-hull positions. As a result, the influence of the side-hull positions on dynamic behaviors of a trimaran running in following and stern quartering seas was demonstrated.
