This paper outlines the approach taken and the key lessons learnt through the Investigation, Implementation, Handover and Operation phases of the Auckland Travel Demand Management project which involved the implementation and operation of 85 ramps metered with traffic signals which are run through SCATS RMS, 35 traffic and occupancy count sites, and over 130 motorway traveller information signs located at the top of the ramps providing estimated journey times on the motorway to three downstream interchanges. This paper also provides some key lessons learnt through each stage of the project including the importance of understanding what levels of operational management your project will provide on the motorway system and the importance of communication with stakeholders through each stage to manage their expectations of the project and define their roles.
