Due to the simplicity and high thermodynamic efficiency, continuous rotating detonation engine (CRDE) has gained much worldwide interest lately. By changing the total mass flow rates and equivalence ratios, lots of tests have been carried out on a model engine, and the operating domains of the continuous rotating detonation wave have been obtained. Only if the test condition locates in the operating domain could the detonation wave be maintained on the model engine. The CRDE test conditions also have influences on the detonation wave propagation mode. The number of detonation waves increases by increasing the total mass flow rate. Four propagation modes have been discovered: one wave, two wave, hybrid one/two wave and transient modes, and all the propagation modes have their corresponding operating domains. If the test condition locates in the middle of the one wave and two wave mode domains, the detonation waves may propagate stably, rotating along the same direction during the whole test. However, the CRDE propagation process would be unstable for the other test conditions. For the transient mode, the detonation waves could not propagate continuously during the whole test, and there are several discontinuities. For the hybrid one/two wave mode, the number of detonation waves changes during the test. If the test condition locates to the domain boundaries of the one wave and two wave modes, the detonation waves may change the propagation direction during the test.
