Quantitative assessment of human activity intensitywas a prerequisite for analyzing impacts of human activity onecosystem as well as assessing the evolution of ecologicalenvironment. A model is built based on GIS in this paper toconstruct a quantitative evaluation framework of human activityintensity. Firstly,13 human activities indices such as GDP percapita, total industrial output value, annual electricityconsumption, population density, the number of business unitswere selected and a set of human activity index system referringto economic, humanistic, social aspects was established. Then, theAnalytical Hierarchy Process method was employed to determinethe weights of each human activity indicator. Finally, based onthe spatial analysis function of GIS, human activity intensity ofthe Pear River Delta was exemplified. The human activityintensity of nine cities in the Pearl River Delta was calculated in1990, 1995, 2000 and2005. The results indicated that humanactivity intensity of the Pearl River Delta increase graduallytemporally whereas decreased from east to west spatially.
