In brushless synchronous generators, the armature winding of the exciter is mounted on the rotor shaft and connected to a rotating diode rectifier that feeds the field winding of the main generator. In this paper, a constant parameter Full-VBR model suitable for detailed simulation of converter connected synchronous machine is derived. Then, based on this model, a fault identification method is proposed for detection of rotating rectifier failure based on harmonic analysis of the exciter field current.
