Empowering Instead of Hindering - Challenges in Participatory Development of Cognitively Accessible Software

Participative design is a method of involving users in the design and development process through a collaborative approach. This method allows to involve the potential users with their needs and peculiarities from the beginning of the development. In agile software development, the potential user of the software plays a central role as a stakeholder, but the rapid development cycles force users to deal with incomplete and faulty software. With the example of two agile projects for the development of cognitively accessible software, the challenges of participative development with people with cognitive impairments are demonstrated and discussed.
