In this paper, we demonstrate a reconfigurable optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal transmitter based on a sliced broadband amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) optical source for directly detected (DD) multiband OFDM next generation wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) access networks. Theoretical predictions and experimental demonstrations validate the feasibility of employing broadband optical sources for OFDM signal transmission over access networks with a large degree of reconfigurability. Up to several Gb/s QPSK and 16 QAM multiband OFDM signals have been transmitted over 3.5 and 5 GHz radio frequency values by using conventional double sideband modulation over a 10 km WDM link. Our low cost transmitter allows the implementation of dynamic bandwidth allocation whereas OFDM multiple access can be also provided by selecting the radiofrequency operation band in a properly configured interferometric receiver.
