Against the background of Ambient Assisted Living,this article proposes a new kind of unobtrusive, nonstigmatizingand continuous acquisition of vital signs asrespiratory rate and related features on the basis of ultrawide-band radar sensing. Through the runtime analysis ofthe reflection data, surrogating mechanical signals e.g. theexcursion of the thorax are detected and linked with physiologicalvalues like the breathing rate. After a brief introductionto the application context including an explanation ofspecific user demands and restrictions of current solutionsof the telemedicine, physical fundamentals of measurementand the utilized electronics, the applied principles of spatialand temporal data mining are described. Finally, experimentsincluding real measurements with the subsequentdiscussion of the measurement results provide an outlookto the capabilities of our approach and grant informationabout open issues and the steps in research.
