In this work, characteristic mode analysis of printed circuit board (PCB) antennas is performed using the volume-surface integral equation and sub-structure principle. Planar dipole antenna and smartphone chassis are selected as numerical examples. Through numerical examples, influence of the mesh size is discussed. For the antennas with a thin dielectric substrate, the number of volume meshes is only slightly larger than the surface mesh. Therefore, this approach is rather efficient and stable for thin PCB antennas.
