An algorithm to deal with the delineation of impact craters in very high resolution images from the surface on Mars is introduced in this paper. This approach is built on two main steps, first on the coarse estimation of the crater rim, second on its detailed extraction. It works on images converted to polar coordinates to permit a more effective processing. The approach is tested on HiRISE images (25 cm/pixel) and validated on two different datasets according to the degree of degradation (preserved and modified) of the craters of various dimensions with errors of about 2% and 9%, respectively.
