Considering increasing number of hybrid and electric vehicles, a growing number of car-pedestrian accident become a problem because these vehicles are virtually silent at low speeds where tire noise is not significant. To cope with this problem, a real-time approaching vehicle detection technique for pedestrians using acoustic digital communication is proposed. In this technique, a vehicle transmits an acoustic signal that typically contains vehicle ID. When a mobile device of a pedestrian records this signal, the device notifies the pedestrian about individual vehicle approaching in real-time by measuring Doppler effect on each signal. Performance of the proposed technique was evaluated in outdoor experiments using real vehicle. As a result, the proposed technique could measure vehicle velocity (measurement range: -2.8 to 2.8 m/s) with error of 0.36 m/s, and achieved a bit error rate of 0.
