Energy is an important input for economic development. Since exhaustible energy sources in the country are limited, there is an urgent need to focus attention on development of renewable energy sources and use of energy efficient technologies. Cogeneration is one the low cost, non conventional source of energy. The advantages of sugar mill cogeneration include relatively low capital cost requirements and the use of a renewable, indigenous waste as a non-polluting fuel. Due to seasonality of sugar industry, cogeneration was possible only during sugarcane crushing season. But with advanced technology of condensing cum back pressure turbines and burning of other biomasses like sugarcane trash, various agriculture residues and wood chips etc rather than only bagasse, a year round cogeneration has become reality.
