The National Crash Analysis Center (NCAC) at the George Washington University (GWU) simulatedthe MASH Test 3-11 crash of the Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck (2270 kg) into a standard 32 inchNew Jersey shaped concrete barrier. The new detailed finite element (FE) model for the ChevroletSilverado was used as the surrogate for the MASH 2270P test vehicle. A finite element model of theNew Jersey barrier was drawn from the array of NCAC hardware models. The objectives of this effortincluded demonstrating the efficacy of new Silverado vehicle model for barrier impact simulations,analyzing the performance of a commonly used, NCHRP 350-approved device under the new, morerigorous MASH crashworthiness criteria, and applying the newly developed verification and validation(V&V) procedures to compare the detailed simulation results to crash tests undertaken as part of anotherproject.Comparisons of the simulation results and data derived from the crash test using traditional methodssuggested that the model provided viable results. Further comparisons using the proposed new V&Vprocedures provided a structured assessment across multiple factors reflected in the PIRT tables.Statistical measures of the accuracy of the test to simulation results provided a more robust validationthan previous approaches. These comparisons further confirmed that the model was able to replicateimpacts with a 2270P vehicle as required by MASH.
