摘要

This paper studies the role of public charging infrastructure in increasing plug-in hybridelectric vehicles' (PHEV) share of driving on electricity and thus reducing their gasolineconsumption. Using vehicle activity data obtained from the global positioning systems (GPS)tracking household travel survey in Austin, Texas, gasoline and electricity consumptions ofPHEVs in real world driving context are estimated. Driver's within-day recharging behavior, constrained by travel activities and public charger availability, is modeled as a boundedlyrational decision and incorporated in the energy consumption estimation. The key findings fromthe Austin dataset include: (1) public charging offers greater benefits for PHEVs with a smallerbattery pack, by encouraging within-day recharge to compensate battery capacity; and (2)providing extensive public charging service is expected to significantly reduce gasolineconsumption and energy cost of PHEVs.
