Before deregulation, there were very few motor carriers in the industry, severelylimiting shippers and their choices. As the industry progressed into the post deregulation era,both shippers and carrier gained more freedom, making carrier selection and rate pricing morecompetitive. Today, as fuel prices continue to rise and the pressure to reduce expenses increases,shippers are becoming more selective than ever when it comes to choosing the right carrier. Thepurpose of this paper is to research the various ways in which shippers select carriers and howthese alternatives can affect their business.
