PERSONAL RAPID TRANSIT AS FEEDER/DISTRIBUTOR TO RAIL

Efficient feeding/distribution systems around train stations are important to attract trainpassengers. This would be a suitable application for Personal Rapid Transit (PRT). Thispaper suggests layouts and operations strategies for transfer stations between PRT andheavy rail. Ticket handling can be avoided by combination with the train fare. Ridesharing can be encouraged by destination signs. The catchment area which can beefficiently served is related to the interval between trains. The capacity of station andguideway can be further improved by coupling PRT vehicles in the station anddecoupling them as necessary en route. Applications in Sweden are illustrated using thePRTsim software. In one case outgoing PRT vehicles were loaded to 78 %.
