Foundations for the design of future WAPS and WACS in Argentina

The Argentine electric system, especially the 500 kV transmission system, has been evolvingincreasingly in recent years. In the early 1990s the transmission system consisted of three radialcorridors, with dominant generation in its ends and a large common load in the area of Buenos Airescity. The problems of transient stability and overloading of these corridors were solved with threelarge Special Protections Schemes or Remedial Action Systems. Given the large area covered by theseRAS, we can classify them within the so-called WAPS (Wide Area Protection Systems). Currently,the transmission system is getting meshed and the WAPS are ceasing to be effective in the manner inwhich they were designed. Therefore appears the need to adapt these WAPS to the new requirements.For this reason arises the need for a complete study. This means take into account the alreadyimplemented WAPS optimizing the use of them and integrating them as much as possible in a largeWAP&CS (Wide Area Protection & Control System). This system should use the facilities of remotetripping and data acquisition implemented in the actual WAPS, but should go further, incorporatingnew technologies and bearing in mind the next evolution of these technologies.
