Medical deployment of electronics is frequentlyhampered by boxy, rigid packaging. Biologicaltissues are soft and curved, while electroniccomponents are hard and angular. Themechanical mismatch can be alleviated by repackagingelectronics in radical new formfactors. MC10 has developed a technologyplatform using ultra-thin components linkedwith stretchable interconnects and embeddedin low modulus polymers which provide anexcellent match to biological tissues.The MC10 platform is based on packagingtoday’s high-performance active components innew mechanical form factors. The platformhas three key elements: thin silicon embeddedin film for flexibility, silicon transfer fromfoundry CMOS wafers to polymer-coatedcarriers and flexible metallic interconnect onpolymer.On-body and in-body applications are both wellsuited to the technology platform. Skinmountedsystems resemble electronic tattoos,and can be worn for extended periods withoutdiscomfort while providing continuousmonitoring. Inside the body, instrumentedcatheters provide a practitioner withunprecedented electrical information about theinterior of the heart.
