QUALITY AND CHARACTERISTICS OF ASH MATERIAL FROM ENERGY PLANTS IN EASTERN FINLAND

Most of the waste resulting from energy production in power plants consists of ash and dust. In 2003the Finnish incineration plants and power plants produced over 1.6 tonnes of ash, from which about 80% is classifiedas fly ash. More than half of the fly ash comes from the combustion of carbon (743 000 tonnes), and the rest (519 000tonnes) from wood and peat combustion. The ash volume from wood and peat combustion has nearly doubled overthe past ten years, and it is expected to rise further as a result of the increasing utilisation of biofuels. The objective ofthe present study was to clarify the heavy metal content of the ash produced by 31 energy production plants in easternFinland. Currently, ash is utilised in road-foundations, in field, earth work and in land filling site constructions, suchas for forest fertilising purposes. The legislation on the utilisation of ash has been updated lately. One of thepreconditions for utilising ash as a fertiliser is that the ash must be further refined and processed.
