Over the long history of lighting technology development a great deal of effort has been given to reducing the cost of lighting ownership but relatively little has been given to increasing the benefit of lighting ownership. The two current benefit metrics used by the industry, lumens, and CRI, only characterize a fraction of the benefits actually provided by lighting. Unless additional benefit metrics are developed, quantified, and promulgated, lighting will remain less valuable than it could be.
