Martensitic Transformations in Casting Biomedical Titanium Alloys and Their Applications

Martensitic transformations in several biomedical alloys,such as pure titanium,Ti-Nb,Ti-Nb-Ta and TiNb-Ta-Zr, were studied by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The influences of martensitic transformations on the microstructure,elastic modulus and properties were investigated. The results indicate that α″ martensite has lower elastic modulus and tensile strength than α′ martensite and a phase. Casting biomedical titanium alloys with low elastic modulus can be obtained by optimizing the volume fractions of α″ martensite and β phase.
