The airbag sector is driven by tremendous cost pressure and the concurrent demand for continuous performance improvement and implementation of new standards for functional safety (ISO 26262). Additional functions - such as a sensor cluster - are integrated in contemporary airbag control units. This type of sensor cluster includes extensive inertial sensors that are shared with other applications, such as active braking and suspension systems. The sensor signals are processed in the airbag control unit and transferred via a network, CAN or FlexRay to other electronic control units (ECUs). This trend toward high integration will also continue in future generations of ECUs.
