Nanoemulsion, a novel mucosal adjuant, mixed with antigen can induce protective system and mucosal immune responses. Iron oxide-modified nanoemulsion (NE) was made to study NE and antigen uptake into the nasal epithlial cells and trafficking in vivo. Our data showed that iron oxide modified NE was successfully prepared and characterized. The in vivo study indicates that iron oxide modified NE can be detected in mice nasal sepctum by transmission eletron microscopy (TEM). This iron oxide-modified NE is a unique tool to investigate the mechanism of NE adjuvant activity.
