The apatite formation on Ti-based alloys as well as Ti metal subjected to acid and heat treatments is governed by surface potential rather than surface roughness or specific crystalline phase. However, their apatite formation tends to be decreased when the strong acid was used in the acid treatment, because their zeta potential was decreased by enriched alloying elements on their surfaces.
