The study showed that metallic and ceramic NPs dispersed in water, if ingested, can translocate the inorganic, not biodegradable nanocontamination to the inner parts of the animal body. This contamination has an effect on the reproductive system at a developmental stage. Stress proteins can be identified as biomarkers of the internal interaction of the nanoparticles with internal organs. Therefore, this exploratory study suggests the utility of the sea urchin, P lividus, as a model organism for biomonitoring the biological impact of nanopowders, and supports the efficacy of the selected biomarkers. The test will be proposed as standard of nanoecotoxicity.
