As FPGA based systems are considered for use in nuclear power plant Safety Systems, the impact on existing instrumentation and control (I&C) architectures must be considered. The integrity of the Safety Function must be maintained, and features that are provided for maintenance and test must be shown to not impact the safety function. This type of evaluation was done as software based systems were introduced, and a similar evaluation will be done for the FPGA technology.
