Artificial neural networks, which are highly distributed computational models, are used for determining the influence of organizational culture and team characteristics on the success of defense projects. The results obtained by neural networks are compared with those derived by using a traditional statistical model, namely linear regression. The results show that neural networks are better adjusted to the patterns in the data when compared with regression. Their ability to adjust to non-linear patterns gave significantly more accurate predictions, and helped in identifying variables that have significant impact on defense development projects success which were not previously revealed by using linear analysis methods: (1) The importance of the work as perceived by the development team. (2) Delegation of authority by the project manager. (3) The existence of high managerial qualifications by the development team members. (4) The existence of a mechanism for distribution of lessons learnt in previous projects.
