A CRITICAL ASSESSMENT OF TECHNOLOGY POLICY OF INDIA FOR A SUSTAINABLE GROWTH

The paper presents a critical assessment of various technology policies adopted in India since it acquired independence fifty years ago. It discusses reasons why various technology policies could not generate adequate thrust to perform well technologically. The paper points out the important features and shortcomings of different technology policies. It discusses the prospects of India becoming globally competitive in the wake of its economic liberalization, which started in 1991. The paper highlights the impact of socio-cultural background of India in implementing technology policies. At the end, the paper gives suggestions to rejuvenate the technology policy of India.
