Academic research excellence and commercial success: towards a new taxonomy on ST disciplines

The paper examined how disciplinary research units respond the rising challenges of universities towards both research excellence and research commercialization simultaneously. Having extensively reviewed literature of academic entrepreneurship and organizational ambidexterity, this paper developed an instrument to measure organizational antecedents and ambidexterity influencing research excellence and research commercialization. Via a survey of the executives and faculty members in National Tsing Hua University, 110 respondents originated from 5 schools and 15 disciplinary research units were collected. The factor analysis revealed that three factors of organizational antecedents and five factors of organizational ambidexterity are crucial. These factors provide crucial managerial implications for developing university's ambidexterity in achieving research excellence and research commercialization at the same time.
