Laser diode source is simulated by a new model with consideration of the inherently different divergence angles of the emitted light. It is shown by this letter that the standard classical approach using an astigmatic point source distance model fails when simulating a laser diode. The astigmatic source model based on the experience with telecentric systems is presented. By using a telecentric optical system, a rectangular object source with different divergence angles is defined and a default MF in optical design software could be used to optimize the optical system. A collimation design example is demonstrated and the analysis results are consistent with laboratory experiments. The laser diode model and analysis methods discussed here could be used to stimulate and optimize astigmatic object light source.
