48 Years in the Paint Industry - A Fun Look Back…

I started working in the Columbia Paint lab on February 2, 1972 on Groundhog Day. There is a movie by the same name about a person that lives the same day over and over. Sometimes, I feel the same way. My first job was as a Lab Technician when I was attending Marshall University in West Virginia pursuing a B.S. in Chemistry. My career path has taken me from several paint companies over a period of 20 years, to Imerys, S.A. for an additional 23 years, as my responsibilities increased from Technician to Director. Currently, I am the Director of Product Development for The ChemQuest Technology Institute, an external technology resource for raw material suppliers, paint companies and end users where we can formulate and test just about any type of paint system available or being dreamed of. We like to say use us as your guinea pig before you use your customer as one. Although there have been many changes over the past 48 years, it surprises me how much things are still the same. In a fun way, I will go over some of the most critical changes that I have seen and things that have not changed. I think we can all agree that now in the year 2020, we have seen some major changes that could not have been imagined in the early 70s when my career began.
