BLIND PEOPLE AND APPS ON MOBILE PHONES AND TABLETS - CHALLENGES AND POSSIBILITIES

Whereas in the past blind and partially sighted people might have been able to use a mobile phone to make a phone call and possibly send a text message, nowadays, with new text to speech (TTS) developments like VoiceOver on Apple and TalkBack on Android, Smart Phones are getting more and more accessible, opening up a world of possibilities with apps that could make life a whole lot easier. Unfortunately, having an accessible Smartphone doesn't automatically mean that all apps on that phone are accessible and usable as well. This paper discusses usability and accessibility issues that blind and partially sighted people face when using apps.
