Geotechnical Issues of the New Acropolis Museum

The New Acropolis Museum has been founded on the weathered Athenian Schist. Due to the presence of antiquities on the site, mainly ancient masonry walls, the geotechnical design of the museum had to meet specific requirements and restrictions. Two types of foundations were selected: the first type was a deep foundation with single bored piles constructed at specific locations between the ancient walls and the second one was a mat foundation, at the part of the museum with three basements. Two types of retaining structures were designed for the deep excavations at the part with the basements: a) by prestressed anchors and b) by self supporting frames consisting of two rows of bored piles. The paper presents the evaluation of the geotechnical investigation results and the principles of the geotechnical design of the foundations, the retaining structures and the protective fill. This fill was designed taking into account the elimination of the horizontal pressures on the ancient masonry walls induced from the movement of the construction equipment.
