High-speed, rural intersections are challenging facilities to instrument and control. Theyoften demand special attention to ensure safe operation. Different practices nationwide andworldwide attempt to minimize the number of collisions that occur because main street greenterminates without sufficient yellow time to allow for safe stops. This paper compares theperformance of two strategies that use advanced detection and augmented control to enhancesafety: an NQ4 LVS device that generates mainline green holds when long vehicles at highspeeds are detected and the Detection-Control System (D-CS) developed by Bonneson et al.Simulation studies are conducted for five intersections, and field tests are conducted for three ofthese. The results indicate that volume-density control is surpassed in safety by both of the otherstrategies and that the D-CS control tends to outperform the NQ4 LVS strategy.
