The photovoltaic (PV) market has seen the entry of different PV module technologies during the past years. The success of these PV technologies as key market players is linked to their long-term reliability and energy yield (EY) performance. Bifacial PV modules are rapidly increasing their market share, leading to changes in the existing PV standards and modifications in the current measurement practices. With this, debates about conventional EY simulations and their deviations from real-world performance have arisen. To cope with these questions, we investigated the EY performance under real-operating conditions of four commercial bifacial PV samples, 12 monofacial c-Si and two CdTe thin-film PV modules during one year at TUV Rheinland test site in Cologne, Germany. The PV samples were characterized in the laboratory before and after the outdoor exposure to determine final degradation rates. Together with these measurements, the collected climate data were used for EY simulations with PVsyst. The uncertainties of the results were quantified focusing on performance and rear side irradiation.
