ROAD SAFETY PROGRAM OF THE SECRETARíA DE COMUNICACIONES Y TRANSPORTES

As of year 2009 the estimated population of Mexico was of about 110 million inhabitantswith a life expectancy of 75 years, living in an area of approximately 2 million squarekilometers and having a vehicular fleet of over 30 million vehicles and a highway networkof 360 thousand kilometers.As a result of traffic accidents, in Mexico 20 thousand persons were killed, 150 thousandwere hospitalized and 40 thousand became disabled during 2009. Road accidentscurrently rank third as the cause of decease in the country, followed by diabetes (with 70thousand deaths a year) and heart diseases (with 55 thousand deaths a year). Roadaccidents have the highest growth rate with a mean annual rate of 5%.This document describes strategic plans and approaches contained in the Program onRoad Safety issued by the Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes for theimprovement of traffic safety in highways and streets of Mexico, including the mission,vision, general objective, strategic objectives, strategies, lines of action, actions andperformance indicators proposed for each action. Conclusions are derived at the end.
