School Travel Planning in Canada: Making Roads Safer for the Most Vulnerable Citizens

Between December 2007 and March 2009, Green Communities Canada spearheaded aSchool Travel Planning (STP) pilot project to increase the use of active travel like walkingand biking to and from school. Partner organizations in each pilot province (BC, AB, ON andNS) worked with 3 pilot schools and 2 control schools to determine whether a shift intransportation mode would take place after infrastructure improvements and awarenesscampaigns have been implemented. This pilot project was the impetus for an expandedproject currently in action called Children’s Mobility, Health and Happiness: a CanadianSchool Travel Planning Model.
