5P/4P/3P/2P BATTERY MODULES RANGE GENERIC DEVELOPMENT QUALIFICATION

As an answer to a larger energy range need forGeostationary battery, at the same time of shorter leadtime combined with low recurring activities budgets,Saft set-up a range of generic battery modules from 2PVES180SA Li-ion cells to 5P VES180SA Li-ion cells.This battery range is based on a generic and modularbattery approach, including innovating concepts such asparallel multi layers bus bars. The full qualification ofthe battery range has been successfully achieved at theend of 2010 year.The aim of this paper is to present the main principles ofthe battery design, to highlight the modular concepts ofthe battery parts so as to minimize technical differencesbetween each size of module. It will also reflect theinterfaces commonalties on the mechanical andelectrical point of view, to provide interchangeablebattery blocks even at a later stage of the project.The paper will also present the overall qualification planand key results based on an envelope approach to covergeneric geostationary requirements for differentplatforms. A specific paragraph will emphasize thedesign and proven performances of the largest moduleof the current range (5P10S VES180SA battery). A lastchapter will present the already contracted projectsbased on this battery range design & qualificationstatus.
