The objective of this Cognitive Engineering & Decision Making (CEDM) TechnicalGroup (TG) panel is to recognize "Pioneers in Human-Automation Interaction Research" and toprovide Annual Meeting attendees with knowledge of the origins of adaptive automation, controltheoretic approaches to human performance, implications of levels of complex system automationfor human performance, and methods for operator functional state classification. Based on theirseminal contributions to research in these areas, Drs. Peter Hancock, Richard Jagacinski, RajaParasuraman, Chris Wickens and Glenn Wilson will participate in the session. Dr. Hancock willprovide a personal retrospective on adaptive automation. Dr. Jagacinski will draw parallelsbetween manual control and decision theories. Dr. Parasuraman will trace the history of adaptiveautomation research. Dr. Wickens will discuss failures in conventional wisdom on humanautomationinteraction (HAI) and methods for systems design and Dr. Wilson will address the useof physiological measures for operator functional state classification in adaptive systems. Thepanel session is expected to promote further understanding among human factors researchers ofconcepts, theories and design principles of HAI and why we are at where we are today.
