NEW CASTHOUSE SMELTER LAYOUT FOR THE PRODUCTION OF SMALL NONALLOYED INGOTS: THREE FURNACES/TWO LINES

This paper deals with a layout for a smelter casthouse producingsmall non-alloyed ingots.The layout of aluminium casthouses has importantconsequences with respect to safety, investment and operatingcost. Traditional solution for casthouse producing non-alloyedingots is two furnaces per one ingot line. In order to improve theeconomics and logistics of the casthouse a detailed study wasdone, which required:1.Detailed performance analysis, in particular relating tofurnace/ingot line connections, impact on maintenance,operations, etc.2.Hazard study3.Modelling of metal flow from tapping in the potlinethrough to the end-product, including breakdowns anddowngraded operation4.Thermal and flow modelling in the launder, in steady stateand temporary operation5.Detailed determination of the launder.It was demonstrated that a layout based on such a configurationis superior in terms of full economic cost. This design is nowpart of our casthouse basic engineering package.
