Aluminum powders are used in propellant, pyrotechnic and explosive formulations, as well as in combustion systems, to increase energy and energy-density. However, aluminum particles are usually covered by an oxide protective layer causing long ignition delays. Shortening ignition time and enhancing combustion can be accomplished by using powders with large reaction surfaces. This study investigates the physical properties and combustion phenomena of highly porous aluminum particles produced via a thermo-chemical method developed in-house. The research reveals a remarkable enhancement of ignition and combustion as well as reduced agglomeration of the porous aluminum particles compared to regular aluminum particles.
