In the United States, bridge-vessel collision design is typically carried out using static impact loading. However, in a previous study, full-scale experimental impact test data were used to show that significant superstructure inertial forces can develop during impact events. Furthermore, dynamic (time-history) analysis and modeling techniques were previously developed to rapidly and accurately predict bridge member design forces due to barge impact. In the present paper, this dynamic analysis scheme is used to quantify design (maximum) forces for two different bridge configurations. These forces are then compared to those obtained from respective static analyses as a means of quantifying dynamic amplification effects associated with barge collisions.
