Design of the Brent Spence Bridge Replacement

This paper will highlight the innovative design features of the final three alternatives for the replacement of the Brent Spence Bridge between Cincinnati, OH and Covington, KY. The new crossing poses many design challenges, including the requirement to carry 20 lanes of traffic (striped for twelve lanes + eight full-sized shoulders), which, combined with a width limitation, requires the new bridge to be double-decked. The alternatives to be described include: one tied-arch and two cable-stayed bridges, one double-tower and one single-tower.
