Geomatics with satellite remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provide beneficial data acquisition and analyzing techniques for archaeological research. The remote sensing technology offers a methodological procedure in a rapid, accurate, and quantified manner for detecting, inventorying, and prioritizing surface and shallow-depth archeological information. Remote sensing methods employed in the service of archaeological investigations include aerial and satellite imaging with multispectral and hyperspectral sensors, thermal infrared-multispectral scanners, Light Detection and Ranging Systems (LIDAR) and radar systems. The main aim of the study is to evaluate ALOS PALSAR images to gain a better understanding on backscatter properties of the areas including archaeological remains over and under the surface of the archaeological site Carnuntum, Austria. For a comparable evaluation the orthophotos of Carnuntum were also obtained. Niederosterreich Atlas web page and Google Earth were used as additional data sources for the study. A preliminary outcome is that PALSAR images are comparable with other data sources and provide encouraging results for archaeological aims.
