This paper presents a case study of the cleaning of the soils and surfacewaters during the course of maintenance dredging of 8 narrow (60-feet wide) navigationalwaterways in the coastal town of Holmes Beach, Florida. The project was performedin the summer of 2009 and took four months to dredge and process 6,890 yd~3 ofsediments. Concomitant to the cleansing was the recovery of over 90% of the solids asbeach-quality sand, which was used locally for beach renourishment and construction fill.The remaining solids were also recovered through polymers dosed in portable tanks. Theproject fulfilled the four Rs of environmental dredging: minimize resuspension, release,removal, and risks associated with removal of contaminants. This environmental dredgingproject is presented as a five-stage process, shown in Figure 1.
