This paper present results from non-linear finite element (FE) analysis of a 170.000 DWT cape-size bulk carrier. Non-linearity in both geometry and material properties is accounted for in order to determine the ultimate capacity, related failure mechanisms and post-critical behaviour. A three cargo hold finite element (FE) model with a detailed representation of the geometry is developed. This model is analysed with different combinations of vertical bending moment, sea pressure and cargo load. The main focus is on assessment of ultimate hogging capacity when the vessel is carrying heavy cargo in alternate hold loading condition on a high draft. The effect of geometrical imperfections is evaluated. Different numerical solution procedures are tested. The calculated hull girder capacity is compared with the reference rules bending moment, calculated according to the IACS Common Structural Rules (CSR) (2008) for this vessel.
