Multibody Dynamics Studies in Asia and Damping Models for Flexible Systems

The study of mechanics was born in Europe and has gradually spread around the world. The study of multibody dynamics (MBD) based on classical and analytical mechanics is similarly spreading. Multibody dynamics in Asia, originally brought from Europe and North America, seems to be developing at almost the same pace as in the originating regions since around the year 2000. In order to introduce Asian MBD studies, this paper firstly overviews multibody dynamics activities in Asia, mainly Japan, Korea and China in terms of MBD researchers and software development. The Asian Conference on Multibody Dynamics (ACMD), a unique global multibody dynamics community in Asia started in 2002, will then be introduced in terms of establishment, research and future development. Since the importance of damping, in flexible multibody systems, has been increasing in order to correctly estimate proper responses, the later half of this paper focuses on damping. A fractional derivative damping model for viscoelastic material which has been studied for many years by the author, will be described along with the introduction of several new and classical damping models for flexible systems. This information on damping may properly serve readers when they conduct response calculations for flexible systems.
